During my freshmen term in office, I voted against a state budget that included more tax increases that hindered the opportunity for a sound economic recovery in North Carolina. I continue to stand by my belief that taxes in North Carolina are way too high. We are the second highest taxed state in the Southeast. That is something we have to change. Taxpayers need some relief in the forms of personal and corporate income tax reductions, as well as a cut in the state sales tax. I also sponsored several bills that would reduce tax rates in this state, and eliminate the inheritance and death taxes.
Jobs
Cleveland County has seen more than its fair share of job losses due to manufacturing jobs being sent over seas to other countries. I traveled to China and observed first hand that government’s policies towards attracting companies from the United States to go to China. The key to job growth in Cleveland County and North Carolina is a reduction business taxes and industrial recruitment. We also must assist our companies in their export opportunities – this is something I have worked tirelessly on.
Family values
We must fight to preserve traditional family values. Those are faith in God, a strong family, values that have been in the cornerstone of this state and nation for generations. I vow to stand by those beliefs and not support any proposal that would further hinder the beliefs and traditions this country was founded upon. I also support protecting the sanctity of marriage by appropriate legislative action.
Education
Improving education begins with teachers, parents and families working together in the community. We must recruit and reward outstanding teachers and allow for more local control of education.
